Monday Musings: December 12, 2011

During Mass yesterday morning the visiting priest, a diehard Carolina Panther fan, was certain to offer up several prayers for a Sunday afternoon victory. On our way to the game I said to Munchie Boy that I didn’t think it mattered to God who wins or loses a game and that prayers for such are most likely pointless. (Although I've been known to mutter a "Oh, please, God, oh please, oh please" a time or two myself) My son then protested that he prays for the Panthers to win all the time. I told him I was just trying to make a point and that his prayers couldn't hurt!

Long story short…we lost the game to the Atlanta Falcons 23-31 (after being ahead 23-7 at the end of the 1st half). On our way back to our car, Munchie looks to me and says, “Mom...I don’t think God is a Panther’s fan!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dreams of battling Evil continue. However, they have recently taken an interesting turn. A recurring theme in my dreams is the ability to hover and glide a foot off the floor. In my most recent dream my hovering morphed into flying! It was such a pleasure to soar above the tree lines and rooftops. This new ability has made it so much easier to evade and to spy on that dastardly Evil.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Dryer Repair Man,

Thanks to you, we now have clean underwear. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to spend the entire weekend catching up on 2 ½ weeks worth of dirty laundry. Thanks to you, the dryer is working overtime and functioning like new. Thanks to you, we did not have to purchase a major appliance with our Christmas funds.

I think I love you!

A grateful 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Santa,
We must have been awfully good this past year for you to take the time out of your busy schedule to visit us and our neighbors! What a treat!
Merrily yours,
The 5th on your list!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Charlotte Children's Choir,

What a joy it has been to see Bethany mature and hone her talent through the 7 years she has been a member. It is with a sad and heavy heart that she must take this upcoming semester off. School has to be a priority right now.

Your Holiday concert was a delight. I hope you don't mind me sharing with my blog friends the piece combining the choirs. Beautiful, just beautiful!

Already missing you,

Music lovin' 5th

Monday Musings: October 3, 2011

Dear Amy (physical therapist extraordinaire),

I think I love you. You are a miracle worker! Your practiced touch has relieved me of what was becoming a chronic pain. And, thanks to you, I was able to run The Race for the Cure pain free! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for me on Friday!

A grateful 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Race for the Cure,
What fun we had this past Saturday! The whole family enjoyed the giveaways: scarves, food, gloves, etc. The scarves and gloves were especially welcome on that cold, brisk morning! Aside from having to run uphill the last mile of the course, the run was really great.
A worn out (yet pain free) 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Colleague,

Next time I agree to work for you, if you find someone else please just call to let me know. I would have much rather slept in Sunday morning instead of arriving to work at O: dark-thirty (only to find I was not needed).  Oh well…I used the extra time for prayer and meditation. Heaven knows I needed to!

A weary Respiratory 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Carolina Panthers,
Next week please invite the defense to show up. Thank you very much.
A still hopeful, 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Cable TV,

Not sure if I’m going to miss you or not, seeing how I don’t watch that much television (aside from football, an occasional food show, and my guilty pleasure, Ghost Hunters). You see, Mr. Sister has found a new hobby…redesigning how we view TV at home…it involves our own DVR system, computers, internet, and lots of magic fairy dust.  I’m sure it will mean adding a few more remote controls to our already overflowing arsenal!

An ambivalent 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Cleaning Lady,
I fear it is time to let you go. I believe your judgment has become impaired. I am still resenting the fact that my wedding ring, the one Mr. Sister and I designed ourselves, the one containing diamonds and sapphires, went missing when you invited your daughter’s boyfriend to help you clean. I will give you one month’s notice and will still insist you come by yourself. I am sorry it has to be this way.
A disappointed 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Bloggers,

My blog reader has been “messed up” this past week so I have not been able to visit as I normally do. Hopefully whatever bug was in the system has been cleaned up. I will try to be a better blog friend!

Monday Musings: September 26, 2011

Dear Munchie-Boy,

Next time, let's try to finish school projects the night before rather than beginning them at 6:00am the day they are due. Okay? Great. Glad to get that settled.

Your Mama 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Carolina Panthers,
I am crazy happy about your win, especially through adverse conditions such as the torrential downpour, flooded field, and all. My wish is that I could have been there to enjoy the win with you and the fans! I was able, however, to catch bits and pieces of the game. The only one watching the game where I work was a sweet little old lady who excitedly told me all about the touchback that occurred early in the 1st quarter.
A purrfectly contented 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Employer,

I thank you for giving me 3 months notice that I will no longer be benefit eligible come January 1, 2012. I absolutely love what I do but I expect a fair exchange for my services. Hopefully I'll be able to slide into any future benefit eligible position that becomes available. Until then I will need to seriously consider any and all options available. I've been with you all from the very start, the very 1st day you opened your doors to the public. I have been one of your strongest cheerleaders ever since. That is why this is difficult for me. With that said, I accept that the economy has been the determining factor surrounding this decision, that it is not personal. I firmly believe that as one door closes, another shall open. Hopefully it will be the employee entrance at the back of the hospital.

Your faithful 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Bursitis,
I've had enough. You can go now. Bye bye!
A gimpy 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Morning Run,

Okay, let's see if these new orthotic inserts will do the trick. See you in 5!

A running 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Housework,
Can you wait until tomorrow? Please? Thanks.
An ever procrastinating 5th
Monday Musings: September 19, 2011
Dear Cam Newton,
Um, our team was the one wearing the WHITE jerseys. Just thought maybe you had forgotten.
A concerned 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Steve Smith,

What was that all about? Were you showing off? I thought rule #1 in NFL football is to ALWAYS protect the ball. Oh, and next game…leave the Teflon gloves at home, ‘kay?

An exasperated 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Carolina Panthers,
In all seriousness, I witnessed moments of greatness in Sunday’s game. It’s obvious we lost on turnovers, but the fact that these past 2 games were both lost by only a touchdown is a remarkable improvement from last year. This was actually an enjoyable game to watch. Even Mr. Sister had a good time.
A hopeful 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Procrastination,

I do believe it’s about time we part ways. Although we’ve been extremely close these past 5 decades, I’m ready to be a woman of action. It is very difficult to be that woman with you standing in the way. I’m thinking sometime next week or next month would be a good time to make that split. I’ll get back to you.

A delaying 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Munchie Boy,
Now that you are about to exceed mama’s height, the answer is NO! You cannot use my shoulder as an arm rest.
Your vertically challenged Mama 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Daisy,

I know you love me. Now that you have access to more of the house I realize you want to be with me every moment of every day. But seriously, could you quit following me into the bathroom? I promise I’ll come back out. How about you guard the door for me instead? Deal?

A Daisy lovin’ 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Without you I don’t know how I would have achieved the CEU’s necessary to maintain my license to practice in this state. The only thing left to do is to pay my renewal fee. If I can get my friend Procrastination to back off a bit, I should be able to do that later today. Or tomorrow.
A grateful and still delaying 5th
PS…thank goodness I have until the end of the month!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 That's all for this week's edition of Monday Musings. It feels good to be writing again! I've missed all of you.

Monday Musings: August 22, 2011

Dear Jesus,

Can you find it in your most sacred heart to forgive me? After fighting with you, all weekend long, I finally realized I didn’t need to change you. I needed to change how I approached you. After this epiphany it was smooth sailing from then on. However, it was not my intent to make you look like you have the chicken pox.

Sorrowfully yours,

A contrite 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Dear 2011/2012 School Year,
The kids would like me to request that you please consider delaying your start until after September. Summer doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to go away. (But between you and me, I’m of the sentiment that it is time to get back into a routine.)
Needing her space,
Mama 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear People of Walmart,

I thank you for allowing me to join your ranks this past Sunday afternoon. It was such fun mingling with the hundreds of stressed out, back to school shoppers like myself. I felt I was with kindred spirits as I dove over several carts to retrieve that last (has to be BLACK) plastic folder required by a certain teacher. Oh, and the way you all stared at me as I was climbing the shelves to reach the last of the dividers on top. Yeah, I’m glad we shared that moment of hilarity. It is awesome that no one bothered to ask if I (the tiny, short, petite, vertically challenged one) required help. Any assistance would have negated the lesson I needed to learn here.

Always,

A procrastinating 5th

PS: Today is Bethany's turn. I guess we'll have another opportunity to party on aisle 6

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Carolina Panthers,
It was a disappointing game after a promising start. But what the heck…preseason is the time to cull the herd. I get that. It doesn’t make the loss hurt any less though. Regardless, with my new schedule I should be able to attend more games. I am so looking forward to this new season because, you know, after last year we can’t do any worse.
Still a fan,
Panther lovin’ 5th
PS: Jake, I haven’t forgotten about you
That is all for this installment of Munday Musings. I must be off to hang with my homies...the People of Walmart. Always a good time the day before school starts!
Microfiction Muse #10: Plotting
of those pitiful Carolina Panthers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Diane, of That's What I'm Here For, selected one of my photos for her weekly muse. My attempt is actually pretty factual. My beloved Panthers were such a dismal failure last year...a season I hope to forget!

Micro-fiction Muse involves writing a very short story (140 characters max-including spaces) based upon a photo prompt. I make it my goal to always use140 characters exactly. Diane Estrella is our host for this weekly meme. Please be sure to visit her blog for complete rules and to visit other participants.

Tuesday's Tidbits: December 14, 2010

Dream snippet:

I rushed to join the marching police band for the parade. No one wanted me marching next to them. I looked down at my clarinet and realized I had no reed. You can't play the clarinet without a reed. Oh well. I didn't know the songs anyway.

So I raced off to join the firemen and march beside their truck, but they drove way too fast and I couldn't keep up.

Maybe the lesson to be learned here is that I must march to my own tune at my very own pace.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a miserable game this past Sunday: the Panthers vs. Falcons. It was cold and blustery, too. Trying to maintain any enthusiasm for my beloved team is difficult at best these days, especially when the team was intentionally gutted by management. I normally do not use the language I am about to but I know you'll agree with me: The Carolina Panthers SUCK! There I admitted it. It's the 1st step towards healing. Now I pray that they can admit it as well and use their draft picks wisely.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Starbucks Barista,

Yes you're quite cute. And silly, too. But seriously, telling my daughter about your 12 inch burrito was, let's say, inappropriate. From this point forward I kindly request that you keep your enthusiasm about said burrito to yourself.

Thank you,
Mama 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Munchie-Boy was moved up a division in swimming. This means more scheduled practices (6 times per week), and longer practices as well (up to 2 hours). He's getting quite the work out and comes home exhausted. This division will either make or break him. So far, he is holding his own quite well. I'm proud of you Munch!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm on this crazy elimination diet (doctor prescribed) in order to find out what foods I am "sensitive" to. I already know I am sensitive to corn and corn byproducts (high fructose corn syrup, modified food starch, etc.), MSG and a few other chemicals. But taking away my yogurt, aged cheeses, and fruit is just plain mean!

Which leads me to a very kind thing Mr. Sister did for me yesterday. I am not suppose to eat store bought bread because of the added chemicals and preservatives. So Mr. Sister, knowing I had a very busy day ahead, baked for me a wonderful loaf of bread...from scratch! How sweet was that?!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We finally got our tree up yesterday. It's not decorated (except for lights...thank goodness for pre-lit trees!) and will probably remain that way through the weekend. I also have stockings hung but not much else. The time has flown by this Christmas season! Hopefully, after this weekend (I work) when school is out we will all have time to breathe and pause to remember the true reason we celebrate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I must now get started on the day at hand...Make it a great Tuesday everyone. Thanks for dropping by!

And That is What He Wrote! Really!

Received 12/7/10
From Carolina Panther owner, Jerry Richardson
Please note: personal comments from me are (in parenthesis, bold and italicized)

Dear Joseph and Polly,

I know how difficult this season has been for you. (um, yes) As the person ultimately responsible for putting a team on the field, I take full responsibility for our shortfalls.(as you should) It is agonizing that we have not performed at the level we had planned for and expected.

When the season began, we believed there was every opportunity for success. (even though it appeared you were readying yourself to the possibility of a Collective Bargaining walkout?) Many of the players were returning from a team that had finished last year very strong. The motivation for the approach was bother performance-based and a commitment to the future. Obviously we have fallen short (you think?), but our faith and commitment are still the same.

Going forward, our plan of attack is to build through the draft while retaining our core players.(it became painfully obvious that we were playing for 1st round draft picks) We have one of the youngest teams in the League, and a number of those younger players have shown genuine promise in this otherwise disappointing season. We won't give up on them. We also have a solid nucleus of veterans that we will seek to keep intact. (I wouldn't blame any of them if they wanted to leave)

I want you to know that we plan to look at every aspect of our organization. What we do in the future will entirely be geared toward putting the best possible team on the field. I am committed to fielding a winning team, and I'm willing to invest the resources necessary to make it happen. (Don't you EVEN dare consider to raise season ticket prices to do this, as you had the audacity to do this past season!!!)

(Blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda....then come some personal excuses and such about any public commentary from the team owner being a distraction to the play on the field...Me thinks the pitiful Panthers were already pretty much distracted and distanced from playing anything resembling football)

I understand that in a season like this, words can sound hollow (you got that right!), but as PSL Owners, you have my commitment to provide you a team that will make you proud.(wishing you would have had committed to this effort last year) With three NFC championship game appearances, we have come close. I can assure you we will be aggressive in getting there again. (I guess we will have to wait and see)

I thank you for your patience and support in a very challenging time. (our support and patience has worn pretty thin, Mr. Richardson)

Respectfully,

Jerry Richardson

(I think Mr. Sister put it succinctly when he said that this was as close to an apology as we'll ever get. What a miserable, pathetic season this was! It is my personal, sincere hope that what Mr. Richardson stated in his letter comes to fruition)

Tuesday's Tidbits: November 9, 2010

Dear Munchie Boy,

I think you are finding your niche quite nicely. Your latest YouTube video shows flashes of brilliance, although I think it ended a bit too abruptly. Regardless, it made me laugh and 99Maddrummer is the perfect foil to you,  the Untoasted Waffle extraordinaire!

Hmmmm. I don't know which event is my favorite. The dance contest and the sleeping competition were particularly compelling and are probably my personal faves!

A still chuckling Mama 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear 6 Point Buck,
You are going to get seriously hurt or seriously hurt someone if you insist on running into rush hour traffic at break neck speed! Regardless of the initial fright you gave us it was really quite a treat to see you up close and personal like that.
A nature lovin' 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Mr. Sister,

I realize work has been extremely stressful for you lately. That, coupled with the stresses I've been dealing with makes for a potentially volatile combination. I tell you what...since we are both off work on Thursday, let's do something fun, 'kay? So, what would you like to do?

A stressing about stressing 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Family,
When a crisis of sorts happens on the home front and I am at work, I am sorry to be the one to tell you this: there is truly nothing I can do about it. At least not until I return home after my 12 hour shift. I have faith that you all can handle it. Really.You can.
Your hardworking 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Daisy,

Seriously? You killed 2 cardinals while I was at work? A mama bird AND a papa one, too? I know it's in your nature to be a bird dog but what has gotten into you? I just finished bragging about you to all my cyber friends and you go and pull a stunt like this. Daisy, leave the birds alone. Now squirrels, on the other hand, are fair game.

A Songbird lovin' 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Carolina Panthers,
Um, well, I hate to admit this (and believe me, I don't go around using the language I'm about to) but since I am one of your most ardent fans I think I should be the one to tell you that YOU REALLY SUCK! I know, I know. Facing the truth about oneself can be quite difficult. And facing the truth about a team you dearly love hurts. It hurts bad.
A frustrated 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Dreams,

At least you've been entertaining of late. Dreaming about having dreadlocks was certainly interesting and who knew I could rock that look. Maybe I should book an appointment at the nearest reggae salon. Or better yet, have Mr. Sister book a flight to Jamaica!

A future dread-headed 5th

My Tuesday is the busiest day of the week and I will be out and about all day. I hope your Tuesday is kind to you. Have a great day!

Microfiction #54 and Monday Musings

The carnies were not amused when the bearded fat lady suggested they all go skinny dipping after lunch.

For details on the "rules" of participation, please visit Susan over at Stony River.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I survived my marathon work weekend. It was busy. It was exhausting. And you could definitely tell that there was a full moon. Bare with me while it may take some time to get back in full bloggy mode.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Carolina Panthers,

Unfortunately, I was at work and too busy to sneak a peek at the game. I hear it was a nail biter. Congratulations on your 1st win of the season. You made my daughter very, very happy.

A truly surprised 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Pop Tarts,
I really should invest in your company. It's always a major crisis, in the mornings, if we have run out. It is Munchie-Boy's favorite food group, next to mac and cheese. I, however, have yet to eat one myself...I just can't get past that scary ingredient list!
A wary 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear St. Anthony,

You are amazing! You truly are a favored friend of Jesus! Thank you for your intercessions.

A constantly amazed 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyone else watch that "hoarding" show on TV? I don't know why I am inexplicably drawn to it. I find it both fascinating and disturbing. But, then again, I also watch Ghost Hunters as well. Maybe I'm the one that's fascinating and disturbing? Hmmmmm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was thinking the other day how life, as I know it, will change in just 3 short months. Bethany gets her driver's license. And I do believe a little bit more "mommy freedom" will be the result! Although I will worry as heck whenever she takes her place behind the wheel, I will also be doing a little "happy dance" in my mind.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today is the the Student Council election at Munchie's school. He is such a sweet, gentle natured kid brimming with self confidence. I do hope and pray that, whatever the outcome, his heart is not broken. Go Munch and rock that vote!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is now time to take on the day. I wish you all a happy Monday with a wonderful week to follow.

Tuesday Tidbits: Panther's Pictorial Edition

I had too much going on yesterday and more of the same for today. Hence, I am taking the easy way out with a pictorial honoring our pitiful Panthers, who currently have a perfect losing record.

The pyrotechnics, prior to the game,
are about the only thing worth watching.

Mr. Sister expresses his extreme displeasure
at the way our Panthers have been playing this season

This photo was taken just prior
to one of the many interceptions
thrown by our 2 quarterbacks this year.

I do believe they must plan
for that very play while in the huddle.

How else could our offense be
performing so poorly?

(Not that the defense have been of any help at all!)

Win or lose, Bethany and I always have fun
when we are able to attend a Panther game together.

Flash Friday 55: Ode to Jerry Richardson

What is wrong with this scenario?
You purge your team of high salaried veterans.
The offensive and defensive lines, along with special teams
Are full of untested rookies.
You make sure you have a “throw away” season
In preparation for a possible NFL strike.
And you had the nerve to raise season ticket prices?
Boo!

Tuesday's Tidbits: September 14, 2010

You know, although I was ill, I was grateful to be at work this past Sunday. It saved me from wasting a couple of hours watching the Carolina Panther's pitiful performance against the New York Giants. Pbbbbffffttt to those of you who think Matt Moore is "all that"! (I know, I know, my beloved Jake Delhomme threw an interception and lost his home opener against Tampa Bay. However, it sure wasn't a walloping like the Panthers took)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I say I am short...believe me, I am short. Here's a photo to prove it:
Things that made me smile these past few weeks:
Monday Musings: August 30, 2010
Dear Food Network Shows and Top Chef,
The past year or so I've noticed many episodes dealing with Arctic Char. I enjoy fish so I have been intrigued with this particular species that was unknown to me. When I saw it on the menu recently I decided I had to order it. Well, it was good but I must admit I was underwhelmed. Arctic Char is nothing more than salmon! I swear! I did a Wikipedia search afterward and found that Arctic Char is a cross between salmon and trout. No, I disagree...it was salmon, pure and simple...same flavor and texture.  Good thing I like salmon but still, I was expecting something so different and more exciting. Oh well.
A disappointed 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of food I have discovered that although I enjoy sushi...a very little goes a long way. And I definitely make use of he wasabi and pickled ginger. However, I cannot make a whole meal of sushi. After a few bites I am done. Any more tends to make me ill. Please remind me of that the next time I go to a Japenese restaurant with the gals.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Middle School English Teacher
You are so cute and perky that what little boy wouldn't fall head over heels in love with you. Now don't go breaking my Munchie's heart.
Mama 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Panthers,

Apparently you played a terrific game Saturday night. The boys went and stayed until the very end. Bethany stayed up watching the game until the very end. Me? Well, considering it was day 2 of my 3 day 12 hour shift marathon, I was warmly snuggled in my bed sawing zzzzzzzz's. Now why couldn't you all have shown up last week when I was physically at the stadium to cheer you on? Regardless, keep up the good work and I will be there at the season opener!

A fanatic 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Dreams,
Thanks for a mostly peaceful week. However, driving off that rickety bridge into the Smoky Hill River wasn't fun. At least I wasn't the one driving. My poor mother was. My biggest worry? That Andy (my new android cell phone) got wet. Oh, and everyone that was in the car got out okay.
A river soaked 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Holy Spirit,

I have been heavily relying on you and your gifts these past few weeks, especially that of Fortitude. Thank you for being so generous. I open my heart and invite you to hang out with me for the long haul. Maybe Wisdom and Knowledge will be forthcoming?

Humbly your servant, 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's this week's edition of Monday Musings. With both kids now in school you would think I would have the luxury of time...unfortunately my week is already packed full. I think we all are going to have to get used to these new changes. Regardless, make it a wonderful week!
Monday, August 23, 2010
Monday Musings: August 23, 2010
Dear Carolina Panthers,
There are only 3 games that I am able to attend this year due to my work schedule. Could you try just a little harder?  Please, for my sanity's sake?
A fanatic 5th
PS:  These may be the last games I'll be able to attend as Mr. Sister is considering selling our PSL's  (boo hoo)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Matt Moore,

You are NOT all that. I remain quite unimpressed.

A disappointed 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Jake Delhomme,
I miss you!
Your #1 Fan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Mr. Sister,

Thank you for the wonderful early birthday gift of my new Android. However, your gift has had some unintended consequences, for you see, I have fallen in love. I couldn't help myself.  I keep "Andy" near me at all times. He is always at my beck and call. He provides me with quick and easy access to my emails, Facebook and my blog. Andy is also is so very generous with his apps, constantly piquing my interest and entertaining me.  I am so sorry you had to find out this way.

Your "two timing" 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Sprint,
Thank you for taking such good care of Andy when he fell ill and refused to send texts. Your prompt action to  replace my beloved was greatly appreciated. I'm sure I'll love Andy Jr. just as much, if not more, than Andy the 1st.
A grateful 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Dreams,

Not only one apartment but two to clean this time? I know I've had plenty of practice this summer but seriously, I am one that believes sleep should be for rest. Can you give me a break?

A dream weary 5th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today starts the week that things should be getting back to normal. Bethany starts her choir with a 4 hour retreat this afternoon and then her school begins on Wednesday. Munch begins middle school this Friday. Wow. The 1st time in 5 years that I won't be homeschooling at least one child! Unbelievable. Oh, I won't be living the life of luxury, however, as there is much that I will be doing and working on. Still, it's bittersweet, but the time to cut the apron strings is now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I best conclude my musings for the day. I have a meeting to attend to shortly and other things requiring my attention. Make it a happy Monday dear friends. God bless!

Monday, March 8, 2010

Monday Musings-March 8, 2010

Dear Jake Delhomme (former QB of the Carolina Panthers),

You are such a class act. I am so sorry that the powers that be felt the need to cut you from the team completely rather than give you the opportunity as back up QB. You've handled this turn of events with grace and style. I do hope that one day you'll be back with the Panthers (maybe as QB coach?). Thank you for all you've done! You'll be sorely missed.

Forever and always your #1 fan,

Mrs. Sister

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Julius Peppers (former Panthers Defensive End)
Good riddance. You only played well only when it suited you, not the team. I wish Chicago the best with their choice but have a feeling they'll be disappointed as well.
Not surprised,
Mrs. Sister
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Carolina Panthers,

I wish you would have rethought your decision on Jake, but regardless, after reading how you handled it (see HERE) I am impressed by your integrity.

Respectfully yours,

Section 205/Row 8/Seat 5

PS  Good move on your decision regarding Peppers

Our Daily Bread

I had fun with a recipe on one of the blogs I follow. I decided to make garlic rolls from The Domestic Mama. (recipe can be found HERE)

Michelle is a good friend of mine from the days when her blog was in its infancy. Now she's pretty famous and has been featured on several foodie sites. I told her, oh so long ago, there would be a day when I would be able to say "I knew her when...." I think that day is fast approaching (I only hope she remembers me!)

Regardless, I had always used my bread machine in the past but now that Black Beauty has arrived I decided to put her to work. I proofed my own yeast (as per Mama's directions). I had never done this before and what a delight to watch those little buggers transform the starter into a foamy, frothy magical solution! I then followed her recipe to a "T". Poor Black Beauty...the dough was too stiff for her liking and we had to add an additional 3/4 cup of milk. That was the only change I made. And what were my results? Here, have a look:

The prayer group I recently joined was serving a meal at the local Hospice and these were for them. Fortunately, I had enough dough leftover for a small loaf of bread and let me tell you...it was very, very, good.

You may have asked why the dough was "stiff" at first. Mama and I had a good laugh over that. You see, she lives in southern Florida where it's quite humid. She needed quite a bit of flour so her dough wasn't too sticky. Where I live, I didn't need quite so much. But it all worked in the end!

I'd Like to Thank the Academy....

It's Monday so it's awards time again. Both Mummy from I'm a Full Time Mummy and Shakira from You Are Never Alone gave me the Happy 101: Sweet Friends and Beautiful Blogger award. Please go visit both of them. They are absolutely delightful blogs.

I am now convinced that I must be a very beautiful blog because I have received this nod from several blog friends. There are rules associated with these that involve telling some things about yourself. I think I'm suppose to give you 10 for the BB and 7 for the Happy. I'll give you whatever I can come up with that you may not already know: (fortunately, I just played a similar game on All Recipes)

1.  I played a pretty mean clarinet in my youth and was 1st chair all the way through high school.
2.  I could also belch the alphabet.
3.  I was in a beauty pageant when I was 17. (no, the belching wasn't my talent, the clarinet was!)
4.  When I got married I really didn't know how to cook. Having kids forced me to learn.
5.  I suffered an eating disorder in my 20's. I may blog about that sometime.
6.  I can pick stuff up with my feet.
7.  I can't sing.
8.  I was originally a biology major in college before I switched to Respiratory Therapy.
9.  I've always worked in a hospital: when I was 16 I got a job in the hospital kitchen and worked my way up        to the snack bar.
10. I will no longer be home schooling after this year.

I guess I will follow the rules and choose a few of you to pass these along to. This is always difficult because I adore all the blogs I follow. But in no particular order, I choose:

Shakira also bestowed upon me the following, unique award:

Isn't it delightfully cute? This will go to the men I follow:

(Okay, Christi is not a man but she's got bigger cojones than most)

And my final award from sweet Shakira (you really need to go visit her blog...it's pretty amazing)

And since I only follow the best....this is for ALL OF YOU!

Monday Musings-January 11, 2010

Dear Carolina Panthers,

I missed you yesterday. I hope you're somewhere warm soaking up all of the sunshine. It still feels like the arctic tundra over here. We're looking forwards to the tropical heat wave predicted by mid week. Highs in the 50's? Whoo Hoo! Bikini weather for sure! (Not that I would ever be brave enough to wear one!)

Stay warm,

Mrs. Sister

Dear Bethany,

Mommy is so very proud of you! Why?
1.  You stood up for what's right and let your moral compass guide you.
2.  You've grown into quite a remarkable young lady.
3.  And the straight A's were just icing on the cake.
Well done, Sweet Cheeks!

Love,
Mommy

Dear Mr. Virus,

Go away! Now! I have not appreciated the major headache for the past 3 days. Nor have I enjoyed the extreme fatigue that has gone along with this. Or those waves of nausea. I'm not having any of it! You've overstayed your welcome and I'm kicking you out. Sayanora you miserable, annoying, punky, evil, vile, unwelcome scum bucket that you are. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Not at all yours (don't even THINK about it!),

The 5th

Awards Monday

Thank you, Erin (from Cultivating Rosebuds) for my lemonade stand. I love this award. I take it to mean that when life throws you lemons, make lemonade!  Although I have received this award prior (see here and here for my nominees) it is something that never goes out of style. Thank you my newest blogging friend! And for those who do not know Erin, please take a moment to check out her blog. She's such a sweetie!

On a final note: Do you want to know why I walk Daisy before the sun comes up?

I don't want to scare the neighbors, that's why!

Monday Musings-January 4, 2010 (I'm Back)

Dear Carolina Panthers,

Where have you been hiding all season? Unfortunately, I was on the road during your big, heaping serving of "whoop-arse" to the Giants. 41-9? Wow! We were able to catch updates on ESPN radio and with Mr. Sister's many phone calls made during the game.

Yesterday's game was just as fun. Don't you just love being the "spoiler"? I know, the Saints will still have home field advantage during the playoffs but you just knocked them off their pedestal a wee bit.

Matt Moore, it appears Jake has taught you well. Let's all hope that this momentum will carry on into next season. Here's to next year!

Your ardent fan,

Mrs. Sister

Happy Birthday Bethany

15 years ago, December 28, 1994 to be exact, our lovely daughter decided to grace this world with her presence. Well, not by choice, anyway. Oh she was just a bit too comfortable hanging out in mommy's womb. Try as I might, nothing I did triggered labor. Mr. Sister was really wanting an early tax deduction so we selected this date as the day to get things rolling.

Early Wednesday morning we showed up at the hospital and Dr. Jones "broke" my water. Did that start my contractions? NO! Bethany was content staying in her warm and cozy cocoon. After a couple of hours they decided to administer Pitocin. Pitocin is what is given to prompt contractions and make them stronger. Okay, so I now had really strong, painful contractions but Bethany, being true to her stubborn nature, stayed put. Now the battle was begun...the more they increased the dose of Pit, the more Bethany held her ground...and the more pain I felt (back labor is not for the faint of heart). Finally, my cervix began to ephase and I could receive the miracle of an epidural.  That anesthesiologist was my angel in disguise! It still took several more hours but finally, 12 hours from the time we arrived at the hospital, our beautiful girl was born. Mr. Sister got to hold her 1st, sing her her 1st song and give her her 1st kiss.

They eventually handed her to me when Mr. Sister finally relented. What a beautiful, perfect, little baby! But I was oh sooooo tired...could I just close my eyes for a little nap I asked the nurses. Unbeknownst to me, I was hemorrhaging. The nurses rushed Mr. Sister out of the room and sweet little Bethany to the nursery. I'm unsure if Mr. Sister realized the gravity of the situation at this point but he certainly did when he returned to the room to find me gone and the room awash in blood. They had taken me immediately to surgery. The doctors assumed the bleeding came from cervical tears. They fixed me up and wheeled me to the recovery room where the continued effects of the Pitocin was causing my whole lower body to perform the tango on its own.

I continued to be weak and extremely fatigued. All the other new moms were bursting with energy and I was very jealous. When I was discharged home I still just wanted to sleep. I continued to seep blood over the course of the next couple of weeks. I was just going through the motions of new motherhood when I started to pass large clots of blood. I called the doctor's office but kept getting the "brush off". Finally, by week 4, one of the doctors agreed to see me. It was a rare, snowy NC day when I drove into Charlotte. They performed an ultrasound and found that there was a bit of retained placenta. Did they admit me? No. They sent me home on antibiotics.

Now you have to understand. I was losing a lot of blood. Blood carries oxygen to the vital organs and my brain was not receiving the oxygen it needed to function properly so I didn't even think to question this decision. When I arrived home, nursed Bethany and put her down...I then hemorrhaged severely. It was like someone pulled the plug!  I was losing so much blood! I had the foresight to grab the phone, head to the bathroom, lay on the floor with my feet propped up on the tub and call 911. While passing in and out of consciousness I was also able to reach Mr. Sister (who beat the ambulance to our home, by the way) I had lost so much blood that my vascular system "collapsed" and the medics had an extremely difficult time starting an IV. I was in hypovolemic shock. When I arrived to the hospital my hemoglobin was found to be 4 (normal is > 12). I was rushed to surgery and  received several units of blood. When I woke up I was a whole new person! Oh the energy! I was more than ready to take on the responsibilities of parenthood! It truly was like coming out of the darkness into the light of day!

So that, my friends, is the story of Bethany's birth. I was extremely blessed that she was such a good baby and didn't require too much from me those 1st few weeks. We have more than made up for it since!

Update on Larry

As most of you know I spent all of last week in Topeka to help out my sister Carrie and her family. They gave Larry a "sedation holiday" last Monday. He never came around. It was decided to go ahead and "pull" the tube that was helping him to breathe on the ventilator. He continued to breathe on his own and he was moved to the palliative care floor. The following day, he was discharged to a hospice facility that was much more comfortable for him and his family. As of this writing, he is still hanging in there but his death is imminent. We are now praying for a peaceful death and for the comfort and care of his family during this difficult time. I hated to leave Carrie but I am the one who still has young kids that need to be in school. I hope and pray that I am able to return for the memorial service but don't know if that will be feasible. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, good thoughts, well wishes, words of encouragement, etc. You have been a God send for me and for my sister and her family. May God bless you all!
