Sacred Sunday

I'm thinking of doing "Sacred Sunday" as a weekly feature. I envision it as a post about favorite saints, Bible verses, hymns and an occasional  brief catechism of why Catholics do what we do. I will not use it to proselytize but just as a way to share the faith that, upon my conversion 15 years ago, made me who I am today.

This week I'd like to share what is perhaps my very favorite Christian song verse:

Who am I that the voice that calmed the seas,
Would call out through the rain and calm the storm in me.

-from Who am I  by Casting Crowns

Wow. When I first heard these lyrics I was literally brought to tears. That is EXACTLY how I felt when I discovered Jesus. You see, I began this journey about a decade prior to my actual conversion. I was a mess. I was a college graduate with a good, decent job but emotionally I was terribly scarred. I was suffering from anorexia and bulimia, self loathing, and depression. It was an intensly lonely and isolated time in my life.

On a whim, I decided to go to church one Sunday morning. When I walked into the beautiful sanctuary I wanted to fall to my knees. An overwhelming sense of love and acceptance enveloped me. At that moment, I knew I was where I belonged. Our dear Lord began to calm that "storm" within me.

This, my friends, was the beginning of my conversion. I continue to be a "work in progress", but then again, aren't we all?

How beautiful that you recognize God's Hand guiding you! I love that.

As a Cradle Catholic, I have my own story of "falling away" and "coming home". I like your idea of Sacred Sunday. I may do some of my own and link up to you, if that's ok. I've been trying to figure out a way to express my faith in my blog.

Great idea!

I am interested in learning about your faith journey.

I grew up in the Anglican church and married a guy from a much more conservative background. He could not relate to an Anglican service so we church hopped for a few years. We were both baptized in the Mennonite church in our thirties. And yes, I am definitely a work in progress. The good news is, I have found some really great mentors.

That is beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. We have only begun attending church (as a child my family did not attend a church..I went with friends occasionally) about 3 months ago. My son loves it. The church we go to is small and welcoming and a good fit. I think that is what we needed we feel comfortable and a sense of peace when we are there.

I would also love to hear more of your journey. Though we read the fine print differently, I think our hearts are in the same places and afford us a kinship that only faith can provide. Lovely post!

I love your post, and what a great idea. Being Catholic has always called to me too. The journey is such a path to your own spiritual enlightenment. It is not only healing to share it, but a great service to all that read it. Thank you so much for your post!

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier. I was at work and they blocked all blog access (darn it!) I just wanted to thank you all for your comments. Now to come up with a topic for tomorrow...

Beautiful post.

I admire your strong faith and conviction.
I always believed in God , but started doubting my faith few years ago and it took me some time to open my eyes again and see the light.

Very nice post... a song that inspired me in the past was "springs of Life" by Ginny Owens- it's a few years old but she has this voice that can swell your heart. I am surprised se isn't more mainstream with her talent....anyway, that soung kind of "ungrounds" me when I feel I am too caught up in worldly matters. No matter what I want- it's my needs that are always fufilled by God.looking forward to more posts!
