The Silence of the Snow

They are calling for 4-8 inches of snow by tomorrow morning. In our area of the country, if this prediction comes true, things will come to a standstill. Those that do venture out will be at the mercy of those who have no business being on the roads. There will be accidents galore. Our twisty, curvy roads weren't built for this type of weather. We do not have the equipment to remove snow from the roads. Our trucks do their best to spread "slag" but usually only on major thoroughfares. Coming home from work tonight, I found the roads to be extremely treacherous despite driving a 4 wheel drive SUV. But until the mayhem of tomorrow morning, I thought I'd treat you all to, what is for us, a rarity...the beautiful silence of freshly falling snow.

I am thinking about Homeschooling my Kiddos next year, so I will be bugging you about tips and things :) All 3 of the school age ones are asking to do this so all we need is for Dad to agree. He doesn't think they will get socialized enough, what do you guys do for that?

I hope your able to escape winters wrath without too many problems, we have not had any snow in about 3 1/2 weeks here and what we did have (5 foot snow banks!) has finally melted in the few "warm" days we have had recently(warm meaning that the temp actually gets above 32F!). Stay safe Polly! but snow is actually very pretty when it is coming down! It is the nasty after-effects that make it un-appealing...

I don't like snow myself, but it does seem peaceful. I just hope no chaos prevails in your area tomorrow - take care!

Lissaloo! You'll love homeschooling! The 1st step would be to go to the Home School Legal Defense Association at www.hslda.org. They have all the individual state requirements pertaining to home schooling. As far as the "socialization" issue this is a NON ISSUE. Home schooled students interact with all age levels so, in addition to learning how to interact/socialize with their own age group, they are also doing the same with other age groups. They learn to be caring and nurturing to the younger kids and are accepted and included in activities conducted by the older students. They can communicate readily with adults (in a coherent, polite manner) as well as with their peers. Colleges are finding that home schooled kids are more prepared for higher education because they are self directed and self sufficient. There are many home school enrichment groups one can join so there is plenty of opportunity for "socialization" there. Just because you are home schooling doesn't mean you will be living your life in a cocoon: There are Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts to join...sports leagues to try out for...organizations that pertain to certain interests so they'll be with other like minded students. For example: My son is involved in scouts and is in the swim league. My daughter is involved in the Charlotte Children's Choir and takes acting lessons. Additionally we belong to an enrichment group where we gather for PE with other kids, go to the theater, do service hours, etc... The sky's the limit! Good luck.
