"Three Words, Mommy..."

...confusing, lonely and chaotic."

That is what came out of my darling daughter's mouth when I queried her about her 1st day at school.

Oh, the angst of a 14 year old!

A couple of positive notes: First, I ran into my Mary Kay consultant and was thrilled to see she was there with her 9th grade daughter. We had a "meet and greet" with the kids, after school (I had to purchase some product anyway), and the girls got along very well. We are now carpooling!!!! Secondly, Bethany really liked her World History teacher. He reminded her of Mr. Sister with all his lame jokes and such. She also got very excited to hear that he will be coaching the girl's basketball team. We didn't know there was a girl's basketball team. Bethany so wants to play basketball so this was great news for her to hear.

Today, I am sure, will be a better day!

My first day of high school was strange too. I'd spent K-7 in one town (Temecula) but we moved to a city (Santa Ana) for 8th grade and that was the worst year of my life. We moved to Riverside in 89 and I started high school here, so I basically knew one person at school, my brother. I was lonely too and probably confused. Throw in the unfamiliarity of a new school, new buildings, new teachers, new town, new everything and I probably could describe it as chaotic as well.

She'll do well though. If she has a desire to do something like play basketball and get involved in those sorts of things, it won't be too long before she finds her way.

If that was the worst of it, I'm sure she'll do just fine. I was terrified after my first day of high school- it was a huge high school, taking up three city blocks, and we had to walk to each class in only 2-3 minutes, I was sure I'd be tardy to each class. Throw in the scary older guys that lurked around our high school, and I was scared for Day 2.

Thanks guys. I remember being overly shy and scared to death on that 1st day. Tats...I was always a teeny tiny thing and the size of the upperclassmen towering over me frightened me to no end, also. Finding classes was confusing, too. Fortunately, Bethany's school is small and I'm sure she'll feel more at home each and every day. She actually enjoyed her writing assignment (based on summer reading) last night.

It sounds to me like she did fine. I understand being worried though. My youngest just started Kindergarten and she was pushed down yesterday by a 1st grade boy who was "alot bigger" than her. For better or worse, we all survived the school age years so I suppose our kids will too. :)

Those 3 words almost sum up being a teenager don't they, what a hard time. It sounds like now she will have a friend to hang out with, a friendly face in the crowd :)

You are so right Lisaloo. It was a much better day today. She also enjoys her algebra instructor and the table of kids she sits with so that's a good thing, even though she's afraid of the math itself. And Holly, we did all survive, didn't we. I was teased mercilessly for 1) being short and skinny and 2) having a last name that rhymed with part of the male anatomy. I had to learn to gain a sense of humor but always had compassion for the students who were the "underdogs".

I see all the incoming freshman at my husband's high school and they are mostly all feeling the same thing. By this time 2 weeks from now, she will be comfortable and dealing with different teenage angst.
