Hope Chest

childhood dreams, neatly folded, safely tucked away

wrapped within whitewashed sheets, cleansed with salty tears

victim of perverted desires, to demons falling prey

childhood dreams, neatly folded, safely tucked away

buried ‘neath  emptied bottles of Zin and Chardonnay

locked away in rotting trunk, forgotten were those years

childhood dreams, neatly folded, safely tucked away

wrapped within whitewashed sheets, cleansed with salty tears

In addition to my usual Friday 55 post (although I had a lead foot and exceeded the speed limit just a bit) I decided to participate in d'Verse Poet's Pub challenge: compose a TRIOLET. What is a triolet you ask. It is a poem composed of 8 lines with an ABaAabAB rhyme scheme. The first, fourth, and seventh lines are identical; the second and the last lines are also identical.

Saying Goodbye: A Saturday Centus Post

(Prompt is in GREEN)

deep within
she knew
time was nearing

despite desperate denials
fearful, bitter truth
came through child’s cry

“Mommy, please stop!”

how hard she had tried:
countless times
countless ways
a few days here
a few weeks there
eventually succumbing
to his always appealing
seductive spell...
his charismatic charm

controlling encounters:
different places
different times
secretly meeting
hiding
even cheating with others…
never worked
always resulting in
guilt
remorse
shame

deep down she knew
he was toxic…
he could
and would
kill…
destroying her soul

and yet
saying goodbye
was harder than she thought

Alphabe-Thursday/Flash Friday 55: V is for Vulnerable

Vulnerable to the Vodka
sitting upon the shelf
and to vintner’s special vintage
a carafe all to myself

Vermouth of particular value
for daddy taught me right
mix with gin; add olive
to serve him every night

Vespers from a bottle
vanishing beneath its veil
ever vowing every morning
in vain attempts to become well

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This verse is in honor of those I know personally as they find validation for their truths in their valiant efforts to remove the chains of addiction. I admire their vigilance.
C is for Change of Course
Cunning is that chilled Chablis
Clever, corrupting, conniving is she
Conquering a will that’s no longer free
Callous and cold…why can’t he see?
A capacious chalice: his coping way
Captive, controlled by Cabernet’s sway
Consuming, concealing, he concocts his day
Caring, compassion have been led astray
Cursing into Crown Royal and Coke
He’d cry, complain, command when he spoke
Chicanery, calamity became his yoke
Remembering not a thing when he awoke
Courage to change course is but a start
Confronting cowardice, playing it smart
Coping, hoping these cravings depart
Cutting the chains constricting his heart.
Alphabe-Thursday: The Letter Y
Yonder 'neath the Yellow pine
Sits the Youth with his makeshift shrine.
Young, carefree and full of life?
No, rather his days are filled with strife.
Yearning for a savior to Yank him away
From the Yelling and abuse that comes his way.
Listening to the chorus of Yellowbird's song
Wondering what it was that he did wrong.
Yelping from the pain of his tears
The Youngest decides to face his fears.
So upon the sacrificial altar he sets
His father's gin and his mom's cigarettes.
Flash Friday 55: He Came Home
He came home reeking of gin and vermouth
with a slight taint of Spanish olive and pearl onion as well.
His anger apparent by the blush of crimson upon his face and neck.
Maybe, just maybe, if she lay perfectly still, feigning sleep,
he would ignore her this time.
Unfortunately, that ploy almost never worked.
Although similar to yesterday's post, the 1st line of this poem came to me in a dream a few days ago. I apologize for the repetition of theme. I think I will take a break over the weekend.
I am participating in Flash Friday 55. This weekly meme is brought to you by G-Man, over at Mr. Know it All. The object is to write a story or prose in exactly 55 words. Come join us and link your 55 in Mr. Know it All's comment section. See you there!
