Winter Storm Edition
Well, we are bracing for a winter storm. They are predicting up to 4 inches of snow and at least an inch of ice by Saturday. I spent this week "winterizing" my car. My brakes were so bad that they had to be replaced, along with my balding tires. My car is ready for the coming assault, but are we?
I'm not sure if it's like this in your corner of the world, but when severe weather is predicted here, it's literally mayhem at the grocery stores. You'd be fortunate if you were able to find a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, or a roll of toilet paper on the shelves by the time the storm is estimated to arrive.
Most of you know I live in NC. I honestly don't blame North Carolinians for this behavior. After all, when Hurricane Hugo struck, people were trapped in their homes, without power, for weeks. Roads were blocked and the whole area was brought to a standstill. But that was a "storm of the century". Our winters are relatively mild compared to most of this nation.
With that said, however, we usually receive 1 or 2 snows a year. A few inches accumulate at most. Sometimes an occasional ice storm visits us. We may even be without power for a day or two. But it ALWAYS melts by the 2nd or 3rd day.
Honestly people, you don't NEED 10 gallons of milk, 20 loaves of bread, and a case of toilet paper to get you through the storm. But gosh darn it, why is it I always happen run out of those 3 particular things right before the storm?
P. S. I found my milk and bread at Walmart, on my way home from replacing my tires. I can breathe a sigh of relief and honestly say, "Bring it on!"

well, It's going to be 78 today here. No snow for us- BUT when there is a hurricane nearby it's sheer mayhem everywhere! So, I know how you feel! Be safe. Stay warm!
Aw Polly, you're getting what we're just missing up here. And it's the same way in PA. For some reason snow storms make people hungry for french toast???
Stay safe and warm.

Forecast has changed a bit. They don't think we're going to receive the ice. 1-3 inches of snow to the south of us but possible up to 8 inches just north of where I live. Yuck.
I couldn't believe I wasnt following your blog lol I read your blog today but I didn't know what to say ! We don't have power outages that often here, at least I have never experienced it . I have heard once in Montreal awhile ago had a black out or something like that but I've never been through that ! I know it's a good thing to stock up on food and blankets and such though. Candles? I think we are to get some blessed candles ready too but I'm glad you feel prepared cause I know I sure ain't . I better think about doing it soon eh?
I also want to mention , my boyfriend says it's because Canada has underground power sources. I did not know that. Anyway check this out: message to Louise TomkielNov.17,2009
FATHER GOD then spoke, "When you hear of an earthquake, no matter the number on the Richter Scale,(Haiti?) the under earth connection has a great force on the entire web of quakes activity. The shaking is having a great effect on the poles in the shifting of the axis.
Your weather will change severely: storms will be powerful, great heat and severe cold is coming. Power will go out. Are you prepared? Do you have a second source of heat and for light? PREPARE!!!
Amen I tell you- - -ALL will happen soon!"

"I repeat Myself over and over to remind you of the gravity of the situation yet you do NOT listen nor do you prepare! This IS most serious! PREPARE IMMEDIATELY! !!"
We New Englanders all have 4wd vehicles and snow doesn't scare us...plfffft! Well, unless you're talking double-digits.... ;)
Seriously, we go through a lot of milk and bread ANYWAY, so yes, I make sure we have both on hand if a storm is coming, but REALLY I was going to buy it ANYWAY...Honest! But my fear is more with the ice storm phenomena - three days without electricty was NOT my idea of fun, and I really miss my trees. We saw more damage with that one storm that with all my winters over the past 15 years. Stay safe and warm!
I had seen the forecast last night and thought of you and a few of my other followers. Nothing for us here in mid-east-Georgia to worry about.
Stay warm, dear friend. Hope you don't have to get out to go to work during all that.
I admire you guys. I couldn't do it.
lol. just north of you here in VA...and we are expecting 5-10 inches. have a little one puking right now so had to brave the crowd to make sure we had plenty of gatorade. craziness out there!
Trust me, it's not just your area where people freak out and head to the grocery store when a storm is coming. We have pretty brutal winters here, always have, so you would think people would be used to it. Nope! If heavy snow or ice is predicted, you're lucky to find a parking spot at Kroger, and even luckier to get things like milk.
I'm glad to hear they're no longer forcasting ice. Drive safe!
Wahooo! I love me a snowstorm...it's a comin' our way too. BRING IT ON.
Polly, I 've never had experienced such severe weather conditions, and i couldn't even imagine how hard that could be.
Take care , drive/stay safe.

I lived in Durham NC for a couple of years in high school after living in Kansas almost all of my life. I was amazed how people behaved at the mention of some freezing rain or snow.
Glad you got your bread!
Good luck with the snow, I think we had about 2 inches today so nothing to worry about although it's still going. We don't tend to panic buy those things though!
It's the same in Maryland. And we always run out just before the panic and rush on the store.
I'm afraid I don't take the weather warnings seriously enough. One storm we will be without water and the ability to flush the toilet because we didn't fill our bathtubs before the storm.
yeah, they always buy up all the bread and milk. And this is Pittsburgh, the weather is crappy all the time, you think people would get used to it. I live within walking distance to the market, so I don't sweat it.
Bundle up and stay cozy!
Now that you're all set, sit back and enjoy the snow! Have a cozy weekend!
oh i bet people hoard stuff like mad before a storm! i would probably do the same. :(
i am in los angeles. we don't really have crazy winters, but last time we had a MASSIVE earthquake, it was mayhem. you couldn't find water in stores. and when you could find it, the prices were ridiculous, like $8 a bottle. mayhem.
now i feel i need to stock up!
Hey Polly, it's Nick - you know Char's husband. Sounds like trouble is on the way! Better get your snow boots ready. Your husband should be ok since he is from Cleveland!!!
Bailey says you should have a collapsible shovel in you trunk.
I'm thinking that we aren't going to get any of that snow. But folks have been yammering on about it all week.
I'm out of groceries too. I guess we'll be having poptarts for dinner tomorrow night because I'm not getting near the grocery store tonight.
I always feel guilty for complaining about the weather here in CA when I read posts like this. I'll stop complaining, I swear!!
I might be in Canada, but we are lucking the white stuff this year. Wonder if it ever gets here. Not that I am complaining.
People like to hoard. Stay safe and warm.
Many people think that they won't get out of the house for months, even if the prediction is only for 2-3 inches. The herds go crazy. And the weather forecasters are at the start of it all.
I am so behind....just reading this now...glad I went to the grocery store Thursday... snowed in ...in the Triangle area!!
Ha! As you know, it's like that here in GA too! Wish we would go ahead and get some snow--it's been cold enough and we've gotten some ice, but no snow. :(
That do that in California when is rains...and and in L.A when there are grey clouds.
