Sacred Sunday: Super Bowl Sunday?

Yes. You read correctly. Super Bowl Sunday.

To the secularists, the Superbowl is, indeed, a sacred event.

Think about it:

The Holy Trinity includes the Coach, the Quarterback and the GM.

The only way to the "Big Game" is through the Quarterback.

The "Big Game", the Super Bowl if you will, is the sports fan version of nirvana; heaven.

The stadium is the almighty altar at which teams are worshiped and glorified.

The individual teams are the varying denominations which promise that their path to the Super Bowl is the only  path. All other paths are "flawed".

The team's Defensive Line are, literally, the Guardian Angels.

What about the Offense? They are the Charismatic Evangelicals proclaiming their team's "gospel" towards the Red Zone.

The Cheerleaders? The Woman Religious, of course.

How about the Sportscasters? They are the Clergy, announcing the play by play action to the faithful.

The Faithful Fans are, naturally, the Congregation whipped into a frenzy of undying adoration of their chosen team.

The jerseys, t-shirts and caps worn by the fans in addition to the commercials and the half-time show have all become sacramentals.

I apologize if I have inadvertently offended anyone with this irreverent post. This is what happens when a Sacred Sunday post wasn't drafted ahead of time. I hope you enjoyed the irony that was the intent of this post. In the meantime:

Go Colts!

Go Saints!

Hey, I am a big fan of Manning and also a sucker for a good Cinderella story. So I'll be rooting for a great game to be played out. May the best team win!
