Sacred Sunday: Holy Mother

I recently came across a blog called The Way of the Upright is a Highway  Jackie, the author, has the following video located along her sidebar. I fell in love with it! I had never heard this song before and thought it would make for a perfect Sacred Sunday post.

Please enjoy Eric Clapton and Luciano Pavarotti singing "Holy Mother".

Hail Thou Star of Ocean

Hail thou star of ocean,
Portal of the sky,
Ever Virgin Mother
Of the Lord Most High.
O! by Gabriel’s Ave
Uttered long ago,
Eva’s name reversing,
Established peace below.

Break the captives’ fetters,
Light on blindness pour,
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.

Show thyself a Mother,
Offer Him our sighs,
Who for us incarnate
Did not thee despise.
Virgin of all virgins
To thy shelter take us,
Gentlest of the gentle
Chaste and gentle make us.

Still, as on we journey,
Help our weak endeavor,
Till with thee and Jesus
We rejoice forever.
Through the highest heaven,
To the almighty Three
Father, Son, and Spirit,
One same Glory Be.

Amen.

I think your Sunday theme is wonderful. Thanks for your thoughtful posts on Sunday.

You will have to explain sometime what you view the difference between the Catholic church and the Protestant church regarding Mary.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I really don't get it. I went to a Catholic wedding the other day and I was a little creeped out by the laying of flowers at her feet to give you babies thing... or something.

Maybe a future post?

I just emailed you separately and agree, this is a great idea for a future Sacred Sunday post. I have a feeling the laying of flowers was misunderstood but I will research that as well (not a custom I am familiar with). I do not consider this argumentative in the least but as an actual request to understand Mary's rightful place within the Church. Thanks for asking!

I never knew these two artists were ever together, so thanks for the share.

The flowers at the feet of Mary. My MIL told me that she did this at after her wedding, and she was angry that I did not do this. I did not know that it was something that was expected of me. As I understand it...women give their flowers to Mary out of respect for her as a Mother.

We don't worship Mary. We believe that she has a special place of honor. I think all mom's should have a special place of honor.

Have a great Monday I am sure you are already asleep.

Beautiful and unexpected. I had no idea that Pavarotti and Eric Clapton had ever performed together!

This is beautiful. And what a great duo.
I'm also intrigued with all the commentary about Mary. I'm always eager to learn more about other religions. I'll be looking forward to a blog.
I hope your weekend was good.
Off to the doctor.
Have a good Monday.

I have many Catholic family and friends, some more devout than others, but I've never seen the flowers-at-the-feet thing; maybe it's regional?

I do love the video, Eric Clapton is one of my faves!
